Mission Statement

I have a passion for arranging and performing works by marginalized composers as music is a force for global change.

Amy Beach, Clara Schumann, and Rita Strohl are a few individuals from the 19th and 20th centuries who composed meaningful instrumental music during a time when women were expected to serve exclusively in the domestic sphere.

Throughout my doctoral degree, I arranged music from these remarkable composers to share with my community. Rochester, New York was an important geographical location for the Women’s suffrage movement as the Susan B. Anthony house resides a few blocks from the Eastman School of Music campus.

Amy Beach (1867-1944)

Romance, Op. 23

Amy Beach entered American society during a period of political and social instability. She defied societal standards placed upon women through her compositional achievements. The premiere of her Gaelic Symphony with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1896 is distinguishable as the first symphony published by an American female composer. In 1900, she premiered her own Piano Concerto with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. During a time when it was condemnatory for women to speak to a crowd of men, let alone have a resemblance of a career outside of the home, Amy Beach’s rise to prominence was extraordinarily revolutionary, inspiring, and novel.
